Are you Ready for Bill 148? Proposed Changes to Ontario Employment Legislation Are Now Law

Bill 148: The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act is now law. Bill 148 will have substantial impact to businesses with employees in Ontario as they prepare for the onslaught of new changes brought about by this new legislation. It is now imperative for employers to prepare for the impact this bill will have on their workplaces and ensure compliance with the new laws.

On January 17th, Stuart Ducoffe – HR and Employment Lawyer will discuss the new legislation and help you get a better understanding of the significant changes to:

  • Minimum wage
    Increases to $14.00/hour
  • Vacation pay calculation
    Calculation changes for public holiday pay
    E.g. 3 – day work week, 6 hours per shift = 6 hours’ vacation pay
  • Leave of absences
    Family medical leave increases from 8 weeks to 27 weeks
    Parental leave increases from 35/37 weeks to 61/63 weeks
    Vacation time increases to 3 weeks after 5 years of service
  • Scheduling of work
    Minimum 3 hours pay at regular rate of pay for any employee who:
    Regularly works more than 3 hours and is given less than 3 hours of work;
    Is “on-call” but not called into work; or
    Has a shift cancelled by employer on less than 48-hours’ notice
  • Sick days
    Employees entitled to 10 days Personal Emergency Leave, 2 of which must be paid
