Only half of disabled Canadians have full- or part-time job: Poll

The unemployed respondents overwhelmingly said they were out of work as a direct result of their disability, with 67 per cent citing it as the reason for their current circumstances. The survey also found that only 23 per cent of respondents feel comfortable disclosing their disability to a potential employer before the interview process gets underway.

It’s Time to Treat Career Preparation as a Student Wellness Issue

Results showed that students who did not receive additional guidance or skills lacked the ability to set appropriate goals, find information, or take action with respect to their careers. They were more anxious and stressed, whereas students who participated in the training sessions showed greater career resilience and a stronger ability to shape their academic experience to reflect their career goals.

Canada’s Top Employers for Young People attract – and retain – talent

Kristina Leung, senior editor of Canada’s Top 100 Employers at Mediacorp Inc., notes that recruitment initiatives for diverse or disadvantaged youth continue to be a focus for many of the companies. For instance, Saskatchewan Research Council maintains a dedicated aboriginal mentorship program to provide mentoring to students in STEM disciplines throughout the school year and Toronto-Dominion Bank partners with various community organizations to provide employment opportunities for diverse youth of all backgrounds.

Career Counsellors: Time to Get to Work

A person’s career is a life-long process. There is a multitude of issues when one is in a career crisis which demands that the Counsellor has a sophisticated understanding of how the nature of self and personal meaning making can interact with stress, anxiety, depression, and how this can be overlaid with cultural and familial expectations. Lack of clarity in career decision making can have a profound impact on performance and persistence, leaving them without a sense of direction. If this continues, they could be at great risk and feel lost, alone, and isolated.

To feel satisfied at a job, people need to identify the day-to-day, oftentimes simple pleasures. Many years of research have taught us that people feel energized when the means and the ends collide; that is, when the process of doing something becomes the goal of doing it. We can apply this principle to increase satisfaction at work by selecting work that is inherently gratifying.
