Laurence Shatkin’s book is about making use of the knowledge and skills that you already possess (utilizing transferable skills), something that I like to encourage clients to look at first when they are considering a career change or a new position. What skills do you currently possess that could take you in a totally new direction, but still require some of the existing skills and knowledge that you currently possess?

This book highlights 7 job categories that a job seeker can pursue and the types of jobs that fall under the categories of Advocacy, Enforcement, Communication, Sales, Teaching, Management and Brokering. The type of education required, possible annual earnings, job growth potential and more, all of which can be found on the O*Net database (referred to in the book) the American version of the Canadian NOC (National Occupation codes). You can do the same type of search/research using the NOC database if you needed to know job market trends in Canada for the same categories and others of interest to you.

I like the way the book connects John Holland’s Personality Types to each job category (Social, Realistic, Conventional, Artistic, Enterprising, Investigative). Those of us in the Career Advising field can definitely appreciate this connection, and it might look familiar to job seekers who have participated in a Career Assessment or Exploration workshop, and make it easier for them to connect with certain job categories.

This book may benefit American job seekers the most because the labour market information contained is US-based, but all in all there are some good pieces of advice and examples of ways to test out your new sequel career while still working in your existing career. This is a good handbook and reference guide for a Career Advisor to work through with a client who is hesitant about changing careers or is not sure about the type of industry that his transferable skills can be useful in.
