The Only Constant is Change: Labour and Employment Law in Today’s Workplaces (On Demand)

On Demand

Course Leader: Jamie Knight, Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP
Duration: 1 hour 0 minute
Price: $69.00

Canada’s workplaces have changed significantly in the past 25 years – no more so than in Ontario. Unions have a diminished role, especially in the private sector. Labour and employment legislation is struggling to remain relevant and to strike an appropriate balance between encouraging business activity on the one hand and, on the other hand, protecting legitimate employee expectations and entitlements. Courts and adjudicators are having similar challenges navigating an appropriate course, which sometimes leads to conflicting decisions and surprising results.

This webinar will look at some of the key issues that face all workplaces – whether or not unionized. We will examine the current state of union organizing activity and what non-union workplaces may lawfully and appropriately do to minimize the potential for unionization. Finally, we will consider some of the more interesting legislative and adjudicative changes in recent years and consider what may lie ahead in the next few years.

PRESENTER: Jamie Knight, Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP

Jamie Knight has over a quarter-century of experience representing management in labour and employment law, including numerous appearances before the courts, arbitration boards, labour relations tribunals, as well as participating in adjudications in human rights, employment standards and health and safety matters. Jamie also has extensive experience in collective bargaining and assisting employers in interacting with trade unions, including defending against union organizing campaigns.

Jamie is a member of the Labour Relations and Workers Compensation Sections of the Ontario Bar Association. He is an active participant in the Human Resources Professionals Association and has spent several years serving on the Complaints, Investigation and Discipline Committee
