PDI #1: Terrific Training Techniques for Career Development Professionals

Filled with practical ideas, techniques, and strategies, this program will help develop your skills to facilitate insight, change and growth in group settings. Participants will learn how to inspire and motivate people, get them involved, and make group learning more productive, satisfying and fun. The focus will be on career development topics including icebreakers, perceptions and attitudes, assessment, interviewing, resume development, job search and review.

Judy Kaplan Baron is a Master Career Counselor, Nationally Certified Career Counselor, a (California) Registered Professional Career Counselor, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Management Trainer, and a Professional Speaker. She has been self-employed in San Diego, California for over 30 years. In addition to her private practice, she has served for 4 years as Assistant Director of the America Online Career Center.

PDI #2: Career Construction Interview

This professional development institute demonstrates how to use the Career Construction Interview (CCI; Savickas, 2005) to help individuals explore educational/vocational options, navigate occupational transitions, and construct the next chapter in their career story. It is important to provide individuals with career counseling in order to increase their chances of academic/vocational success. Most individuals do not receive career counseling. Instead, they receive career guidance. Career counseling constitutes a psychological intervention performed by a professional. Today’s workers need both career counseling and career guidance to help them navigate and adapt to work in the 21st century. Dr. Kevin Glavin will detail the history and content of the CCI, and provide a live demonstration of the CCI with a volunteer client.

Kevin Glavin is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Colorado Denver. He holds a Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision, a Master’s in Business Information Technology Systems, and a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Economics. Dr. Glavin specializes in Career Counseling, Research in Counseling, and the Integration of Technology and Counseling. He is a former president of the Ohio Career Development Association, and currently serves as Editor for the Journal of Employment Counseling.

The Robots are Coming: From Job Elimination to Career Opportunity
Future developments in disruptive technology, economic globalization, and the movement toward mass higher education promise to destabilize work, the definition of career, and ultimately how individuals find purpose in life. During this session, we will explore the predictions around these trends and the implications for career development. How can a career counselor effectively guide clients when trait-matching strategies seem too narrow to account for these rapidly evolving dynamics? What client behaviors should career counselors foster to enable their clients to respond effectively to disruptive changes in work? The session will conclude with an examination of the concepts and potential applications of the Chaos Theory of Careers, a theory that draws from ideas in both science and spirituality and was developed to guide preparation for careers in an environment of unpredictability.

#8 Mental Health and Career Development
The purpose of this presentation is to enable career service providers with key strategies to appropriately address clients with mental health issues. The session will specifically discuss the mechanism of mental health and career development, intake techniques, selecting appropriate assessments and developing a referral process.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to better articulate practical approaches to identify and serve individuals who have both career development and mental health needs.

#9 Multicultural and Social Justice Competence in Career Counseling
If anyone has an obligation to social justice and social action, it would be the career practitioner who serves a diverse population. Often practitioners shy away from becoming involved in social action for a variety of reasons, however, one of the main reasons is that they just do not know what to do. In this workshop, participants will be given an entry-level toolbox for implementing social action with their career clients.
