The 2017 Ontario Labour Market Conference: New and Emerging Careers in Public Service, is devoted entirely to the largest sector in Ontario and the employer of one in five Ontarians. We’ve invited Ontario’s most prominent public sector employers with one simple instruction: ‘Please tell us about the occupations that are growing, occupations that haven’t existed before, the impact of retirements, and where you are having the greatest difficulty recruiting workers.’

It is easy to lose site of the enormous scope of public sector employment. While we’re all aware of the Ontario Public Service, both the federal and municipal governments employ significant numbers of our population. Add to this regional government, crown corporations and government agencies. And government funding flows even further into school districts, colleges and universities and Ontario’s 14 Local Health Integration Network regions.

This conference isn’t going to focus on the short-comings of public sector employment. We want to celebrate public service as a professional calling and seek out the guidance and information that will be necessary for individuals to secure and succeed in long-term, meaningful careers. The public sector provides multiple advantages and we plan to fully explore these opportunities.
