POSITION: Virtual Employment Consultant, PrepCan (2 positions)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time Regular

LOCATION: Sussex Centre location

REPORTING TO: Project Manager, Preparing to Work in Canada Program

START DATE: Nov 1st 2017

SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm

HOURS: 35 hours/week

ANNUAL SALARY: $51,870-$52,852.80




The Preparing to Work in Canada Program (PrepCan) funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is seeking a Virtual Employment Consultant. Utilizing on-line tools, the Virtual Employment Consultant will assist selected economic immigrants and their families who are landing in Canada with their pre-arrival employment needs in order to expedite their employment search and goals. Concentrating on the individual needs of the client, the Virtual Employment Consultant will work one to one with pre-arrival clients in their source countries to develop their customized pre-arrival action plan and develop employability and job search tools to secure employment in Canada within a virtual environment. Consulting will include but not be limited to accreditation, creation of a path to employment, career exploration, associated and transitional career choices and the development of job search tools and skills.



  • Provide one to one virtual employment counselling to clients who have been identified to immigrate to Canada.
  • Provide needs assessment and develop a customized Pre-arrival Action Plan with a focus on employment using on line tools.
  • Assist clients to identify the employment pathway that meets their individual needs, including process for accreditation where necessary, pathway to certification, alternative and transferable career choices and employment opportunities.
  • Provide guidance in developing a job search strategy, identifying and matching career interests, skills and aptitudes, developing interview techniques and preparing a resume and cover letter, developing a personal LinkedIn profiles etc both one to one or in on-line webinar formats
  • Utilize knowledge of the labour market to assist clients with their job search needs
  • Utilizing the knowledge of local resources, community programs and services, assist clients to make connections to in country programs and services to provide a continuum of employment and settlement supports.
  • Handle telephone & on-line inquires; quickly assess customers initial employment service needs and effectively communicate relevant next steps
  • Conduct orientations for all identified clients and assist them to register for individual and group on-line activities and direct them to the on-line library of resources and links.
  • Provide information on the labour market, careers and occupations, education, training and employment opportunities and career planning and job search strategies
  • Support client communication services such as email, voice mail and live chat
  • Track client inquiries, identify opportunities, and make recommendations related to improve services and to provide value-added services
  • Support the PrepCan Team with administrative services including general office administrative supports, data collection and entry, maintenance of databases, preparation of statistical reports using in house tools and iCARE
  • Maintain an organized and productive work environment
  • Assist Project Manager and project team to procure workshop/webinar facilitators and guest speakers
  • Other related duties as assigned



  • Relevant Post-Secondary Education in related fields or a minimum of 3 years of work experience in a customer service capacity in the career services sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with newcomer clients, providing client orientation & overview of services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Job Search Strategies, current employment trends, labour market information and appropriate workplace behaviours with a focus on Foreign Trained Professionals
  • In- depth knowledge of LMI research, job search resources, online employment tools to help clients conduct a self-directed job search
  • Demonstrated knowledge of immigrant issues with a settlement and employment focus.
  • Knowledge of licensing, accreditation for Foreign Trained Professionals, employment pathways and transferable career choices
  • Experience with facilitating and presenting to diverse audiences using web-based tools and live chat functions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong team work, prioritization and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of CIC programs & services Canada
  • Solid administrative skills and demonstrated use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), various web browsers, Internet networks, on-line employment tools and webinar technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to new technology in a continuously improving and changing work environment
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends or split shifts as necessary
