Life Skills Counsellor

Tropicana Community Services Organization

Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, child care, educational and employment services, and youth development.

Tropicana Community Services is seeking a Life Skills Facilitator to work with disadvantage young adults (aged 15-30) who face barriers to full employment due to lack of housing, income, family/relationships, addictions or health issues. The Life Skills Facilitator will be responsible for a complex and demanding caseload.


  • Manage an assigned yearly caseload of approximately 270 clients
  • Interview and assess each participants’ appropriateness for the TYJC program: their needs, stability, self-management skills, life style choices and readiness to participate in a pre-employment program
  • Provide clients with effective career development strategies and help them to incorporate into personal development plans
  • Provide job search skills training and career planning services
  • Conduct weekly information sessions to potential candidates on site
  • Support each participant on issues affecting their interpersonal relationships
  • Provide case management and follow up for all youth referred to the program
  • Provide weekly check-ins with the youth at the paint-site
  • Conduct off site outreach and presentations to referring agencies
  • Maintain accurate case documentation in internal database e. g CTMS and provide statistical information as requested
  • Provide information and referral to other services/agencies regarding housing, addictions, health, legal aid and income support
  • Assist the TYJC Pre-placement supervisor and Placement supervisor with work planning and setting of short and long term job/educational goals, as well as support the participants at the paint site
  • Contribute to agency’s outreach effort; maintain useful relationships with community partners
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Tropicana Community Services as outlined in the policy manual
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner at all times.

  • Proactively contributes to the organization.
  • Initiates or assists with other projects as required.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • University degree in Psychology and or Counselling background
  • Knowledge of counselling and life skill
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth risk factors and strength based interventions
  • Knowledge of current labour market trends
  • Exceptional presentation skills and strong facilitation skills
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and initiative
  • Self-directed and results-oriented (ability to set priorities and remain focused on result)
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work in a multicultural/multiracial environment
  • Creative problem solving and demonstrates a high level of independence of action, conflict resolution and decision making
  • Strong research and attention to detail
  • Work experience in a nonprofit sector/social service setting
  • Solid working knowledge of Employment Ontario programs
  • Experience facilitating career and employment workshops
  • Computer literacy (knowledge of Microsoft applications and Internet)

Location: Tropicana Community Services
Environment: Office and on the road
Mobility: Travel required
Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. generally; will vary according to needs
Extended Hours: Occasionally
Dress Code: Professional business attire
