Job Developer / Employment Counsellor

Please note this is a one year contract position.

The purpose of this position is to provide employment related support services to clients within the JHS Pre Apprentice Welding Program.

The Pre Apprentice Welding Program is an employment based program funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities (MTCU) in partnership with Mohawk College, Elizabeth Fry Society, Hamilton Branch and St. Leonard’s Society Hamilton.

This position reports directly to the Manager of Adult Justice & Community Services.

DUTIES:

  •          Provide employment support services (employment counselling and job development) in individual and group format
  •          Assist clients to set realistic and achievable goals, provide case management through service interventions and exit strategy
  •          Complete file documentation, case management, follow up and statistical reports according to program, agency and funder requirements
  •          Liaise with employers to develop paid work placements for participants
  •          Monitor work placements, work collaboratively with employers and participants to resolve issues
  •          Refer to community service providers for additional education, training and employment supports where appropriate
  •          Position requires travel within the community to establish, monitor and evaluate work placements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  •          Completion of relevant post secondary education program (degree / diploma) from an accredited university, college
  •          Experience / familiarity with welding is an asset
  •          Certification in / facilitation of life skills programming an asset

Experience:

  •          Minimum three years relevant experience including employment counselling, facilitation and job development

Knowledge:

  •          Familiar with the local labour market and it’s projected performance, specifically welding and related fields
  •          Knowledge of local community resources relating to employment and social services
  •          Knowledge of the John Howard Society of Hamilton, Burlington & Area

Language:

  •          Excellent English language skills: speaking, writing, reading and understanding
  •          Additional language capacity is an asset

  •          Strong interpersonal, communication, time management and organization skills
  •          Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  •          Ability to establish and maintain committed and cooperative working relationships with funder (MTCU), employers, co-workers, supervisors, clients and community partners
  •          Demonstrated ability using a client centred approach to provide services to multi barriered clients, ability to case manage clients effectively and efficiently
  •          Sound decision making ability within program, agency and funder guidelines
  •          Demonstrated ability to document pertinent information following agency protocols
  •          Strong research skills and the ability to apply information in a timely and appropriate manner
  •          Computer skills that support the duties of the position (MS Word, MS Excel, Internet, Email)
  •          Consistent demonstrated history of punctuality and attendance

 Personal Qualities:

  •          Consistent demonstration of positive and professional workplace behaviours
  •          Flexible, willing to accept alternate assignments, sometimes on short notice

 Other:

  •          Adherence to agency confidentiality and code of ethics policies
  •          Provision of a satisfactory criminal reference check
  •          Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, valid insurance and clean driving record
  •          Ability to work different schedules including evenings and weekends
