Employment Specialist (Intern)

Summary:

Provide Employment Services for Persons with Disabilities who are seeking employment and/or education. Interview and assist clients to develop job readiness skills and job search strategies. Administer tests to determine client interest, aptitudes and abilities of clients. Collect labour market information for clients regarding job openings and skill requirements. Counsel clients on work and career related issues.

 

Intern Eligibility:

This position is being funded under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must be between 15 and 30 years of age on the start date of the job. You also must have been a full-time student during the previous academic year and be intending to return to full-time studies in the next academic year. You also must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act. You must also be legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial legislation and regulation

Social Work – Degree students who are entering 3rd or 4th year, or who are entering 2nd year of a Social Work Diploma program. Psychology or Clinical Counseling students will also be considered. Excellent organizational, time management, and oral and written communication skills Community-based agency experience is an asset Confidential security clearance, Criminal Record Check required

 

Description:

Reporting to the Program Manager the Intern is responsible for:

· Conducting intakes to ensure eligibility for the project and referrals for ineligible applicants

· Explain project expectations, confidentiality, and obtain consent

· Conduct basic skill assessments and group counseling pre-employment seminars to ascertain client awareness and capabilities with regard to employment related issues

· Develop and/or assemble materials & information to be presented in a variety of situations

· Provide feedback to case managers to assist in assessing employment suitability and/or need for further counselling

· Conduct individual counselling to reduce unrealistic expectations in regards to employment barriers and identifying the need for referrals to other community programs.

· Directing job search toward appropriate goals and needs of clients

· Supporting clients to access employment related certification, job search techniques, accepting appropriate positions, adapting to new work environments

· Matching clients’ abilities to potential positions through job site and/or task analysis

· Works with employers to ensure required workplace accommodations are in place, provides problem-solving, education to employers.

· Maintain electronic and paper files, complete monthly client progress reports

Salary: $15.50 /hour
