Employment Services Counselor

Covenant House

As Canada’s largest homeless youth agency, Covenant House Toronto changes lives by providing the widest range of services and support under one roof. A national leader, we educate and advocate for change to help at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth by influencing public policy and delivering prevention and awareness programs. More than a place to stay, we serve almost 1,000 youth through our 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community and about 2,000 with our comprehensive services, including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and aftercare, annually. The agency raises about 80 percent of its $22.8 million annual operating budget from donations. Covenant House is part of an international recognized child care agency with “houses” in 27 cities in Canada, the U.S. and Latin America. The Toronto site has served more than 90,000 youth over 33 years.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Conducting assessments of youths’ skills and barriers to successful employment and implementing plans with youth to remove/reduce barriers
  • Assisting youth with job search techniques; resume preparation and maintenance; completing application forms; mock job interviews; job retention skills; personal budgeting; problem solving and career planning
  • Liaising with employers to locate appropriate job referrals for youth
  • Referring youth to internal Covenant House programs as well as community agencies/programs, when appropriate
  • Researching, designing and facilitating daily employment workshops for street involved youth, and summer employment groups
  • Planning with youth for future career related opportunities including education, full and part time work and skills training
  • Implementation and ongoing evaluation of job search plans
  • Recruiting and arranging for guest speakers from outside the Agency to do presentations to the youth
  • Assembling daily job search leads from the newspapers and internet and distributing to youth;
  • Gathering and preparing statistics for monthly Vocational Resources report.
  • Communicating youths progress with the Case Management Team on a daily/weekly basis
  • Assessing youths employability skills/barriers and completing written reports on the assessment
  • Work as part of a team to ensure best service delivery practices that is meeting the needs of the youth we serve



  • A Child and Youth Worker diploma (College or University) with 3 years experience working with marginalized youth
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication and computer skills using Word, Excel, internet and e-mail
  • Familiarity with GTA community agencies and services for disadvantaged youth
  • Life Skills Coach training and Job Development experience are assets
  • Ability to work independently; have flexible work hours including some evening hours as required.
  • Ability to make independent judgements and decisions and be a team player.
