Employment Counsellor, Life Skills

Full-time /One-year Contract beginning ASAP, with the possibility of renewal/ Jane & Finch

The Toronto Youth Job Corps (TYJC) program helps at-risk youth gain sustainable employment through skill development and life skill training. A 5-weeks pre-employment training, assessment, and work experience leads to a 6-24 week subsidized work placement, with the goal of securing full time employment. Staff typically work with sector partners to place participants in various work experience locations, monitor their performance, and assess suitability for full- time employment.

The individual in this position:

  • Interviews and assesses client for appropriateness of program; manages client and referring agent expectations
  • Develops materials for life skills and employability workshop delivery and facilitates sessions
  • Provides case management, individual counselling, life skills coaching and group facilitation
  • Assesses clients’ abilities, skills and needs, and establishes mutually agreed upon employment action plan
  • Provides community outreach by marketing the program and liaising with community service providers
  • Monitors clients’ performance with follow-up of individual plans; helps with implementation of individual plan and provides feedback
  • Maintain complete, updated files, case notes and documentation on a database, Salesforce
  • Completes monthly stats and reports to funder requirements

The successful candidate has a university degree in social work, education or psychology or other related social science discipline, and 1-2 years of work experience with at-risk youth. You have experience providing workshop development and facilitation to a young audience, demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, counselling and observation/report writing skills, are able to communicate with a varied client population and deal with a variety of professional and psycho/social issues. You are able to deal effectively with youth from different cultural and racial backgrounds and/or with special needs. Knowledge of a second language would be an asset. Certification from an organization such as VRA Canada or ICCI would be an asset.
