Position: Employment Counsellor
Location: MicroSkills, 1 Vulcan Street, Etobicoke, ON
This position is responsible for assisting clients to clarify their employment and training needs and establishes short and long term employment goals. Develops an action plan and completes a client’s employability assessment. Orients clients to the workplace, assists them with job readiness skills, job search strategies, resume writing and preparation for job interviews. Refers clients to internal/external services as identified. Researches the labour market and designs/delivers various employment preparation workshops.
College Diploma in a related field.
Two (2) years of related experience.
Experience in training, program coordination and employment counseling.
Knowledge of employer expectations, workplace culture, labour market, occupational trends.
Awareness of challenges/ barriers to employment experienced by target group;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with clients facing multiple barriers to economic and self reliance, employing a holistic perspective and cultural sensitivity.
Knowledge of current regulatory environment affecting immigrants, refugees, individuals in receipt of social assistance, employment insurance or ODSP.
Training and experience in career and employment counseling, case management and action planning; job search training and job search services.
Able to provide various training including Internet and computer software required for career planning and job search.
Demonstrate time management and organizational skills to meet timelines and flexibility to adapt well to changing priorities.
Experience in applying leading edge business intelligence, analysis tools, proficiency in MS Words, Excel, PowerPoint and Project Management methodologies.
Team player that contributes to an open, innovative, responsive and professional team environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including report writing & tracking results.
Identifies barriers to employment and assists clients with job readiness skills, job search strategies, resume writing and preparing for job interviews. Provides case management services to clients; including service planning, evaluation and scheduled follow-up. Conducts case conferences with Business Development Specialist for clients referred to placement/employment.
Interviews clients to obtain employment history, educational background and career goals. Develops an employment action plan for each client.
Facilitates one-on-one resume writings, interview preparations, job maintenances and other labor market information workshops.
Assesses client needs for assistance to overcome barriers, i.e. credential evaluations, literacy training, financial assistant for further occupational training and refers clients to the appropriate services.
Updates clients’ files and client data in organization’s and funders’ databases. Reports program outcomes to Senior Management team.
Collects and analyzes clients and employers feedback information regarding the organization’s quality of service.
Provides information and orientation to walk-in clients. Informs/orients potential clients and members of the public as to the organization’s services and programs.
Researches community/employer resources.
Delivers monthly presentations and facilitates workshops for clients and staff on topics related to employment and training for our unemployed clients.
Liaises with Youth Services department and Ontario Works program for program support and intake registration.
Observes and practices appropriate procedures in regards to Fire, Safety, Quality and environmental standards. Participates in team meetings and decision-making. Maintains a safe, orderly and tidy work area.
