Employment Counsellor

The Regina Open Door Society (RODS) is a non-profit organization that provides settlement and integration services to refugees and immigrants in Regina. RODS is committed to meeting the needs of newcomers by offering programs and services that enable them to achieve their goals and participate fully in the larger community

The Regina Open Door Society Inc. is seeking a qualified individual to staff the full-time term position of Employment Counsellor. The start date for this position is Tuesday, July 4, 2017.

Position Summary: This position’s primary responsibility is providing individual and small group employment counselling to newcomers to Canada to assist them in finding work and succeeding in the Canadian workplace.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and small group employment counselling to newcomers
  • Identify barriers to employment and develop action plans, as needed
  • Assist clients with résumés and cover letters, job search, job applications, job interviews, etc.
  • Refer clients to ES workshops and programs
  • Refer clients to other RODS services or external organizations as appropriate
  • Enter client data into the database, keep records and do reports
  • Follow-up with clients for employment maintenance and evaluation
  • Work in close collaboration with Job Developers to determine suitable job matches for clients that are consistent with clients’ needs, skills, abilities and career goals
  • Other duties as assigned


Required qualifications/education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Human Resources or other related field
  • Training and experience in employment counselling
  • Experience working with newcomers to Canada including those with limited English language skills
  • Strong leadership and problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, collaboration and organization skills
  • Proven accountability, resourcefulness, initiative, and professionalism
  • Recognized ability to work cooperatively in a cross-cultural setting
  • Proven ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Strong technological skills; proficiency in MS Office Applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and database use
  • Knowledge of the local labour market, workplace practices, employment standards and community resources


Hours of work:

The standard hours of work are Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., with an EDO every second week. The annual salary for this position is $46,413.19 per year ($26.45 per hour). All positions at RODS require a clean criminal record check.
