Employment Consultant – Immigrant Specialist, EPBC Program

Each year hundreds of immigrants chose to make Nanaimo their new home. Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society (CVIMS) is a registered charity and a non-profit, community-based agency that works with individuals and organizations. Since 1979, we have responded to the needs of the community by developing programs and services to ensure that all those in our diverse community have equitable access to its services and opportunities.

We are currently recruiting for an:

EMPLOYMENT CONSULTANT

Immigrant SPECIALIST, EPBC Program

FTE 37.5 hrs/week – Maternity Leave Replacement; 1 year term beginning June 19, 2017

You MUST HAVE:

  • BC Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP)
  • Relevant Post-Secondary education in Career Development, Career Practitioner training, Counselling, Education, Social Work, Psychology or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Proven competence in employment counselling, program facilitation and case management
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse groups with a wide range of barriers to employment
  • Strong cultural competence and understanding of cultural diversity
  • Experience working with the Employment Program of BC (EPBC)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with the provincial ICM system
  • Superior inter-personal and communication skills; excellent spoken and written English skills
  • Computer literate in word processing, internet web search, e-mail, Power Point

 

Job Summary:
Working as part of a team, the Employment Consultant’s main priorities are providing one-to-one support to assist individuals succeed in their employment goals; organize and deliver job search workshops; coordinate job mentoring opportunities, and liaise with employers to create employment opportunities for clients.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:
Provide specialized, culturally competent employment and career counselling and case management for immigrants and visible minorities within the Central Island region, including:

  • Employment Needs Assessment (including ERIQ etc)
  • Return-to-Work Action Plan Development (RTWAP)
  • Career Assessment and Planning
  • Skill Development and Training Support
  • Job Search Advising and Coaching
  • Resume and Cover Letter Support
  • Referrals

 

Case Management and Administration, including:

  • RTWAP follow up
  • Maintain client records
  • ICM data entry
  • Deliver Life Skills & Job Search Workshops
  • Liaise with local employers
  • Arrange mentorships for immigrants with employers or local professionals
  • Creates employment opportunities for clients by locating prospective employers; making cold calls, networking and developing partnerships with employers

 

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience working with people from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds or with marginalized  populations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the barriers faced by immigrants in seeking employment in Canada and British Columbia
  • Candidates with a second language

The successful candidate will have respect for diversity and proven abilities in working with diverse clientele with a wide range of barriers. Awareness of one’s own capabilities and understanding of when to draw upon others’ expertise, a positive attitude and professional conduct, are vital.
