What is ContactPoint?

ContactPoint is the practitioner-driven, Canadian online community program of CERIC (Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling) dedicated to providing multi-sectoral career development professionals with career resources, learning and networking.

As a charitable organization committed to advancing education and research in career counselling and career development within Canada, CERIC’s mission includes the support of professionalism in the career and employment counselling field, with a focus on staff development, curriculum development and applied research. How do I become a member of the ContactPoint community?

On our home page you will see the image below. Click on the Register now green button to go through a simple registration process. The ContactPoint site is a community site – by and for career development professionals in Canada as well as beyond. You are encouraged to join the site and engage – post content (jobs, events, directory listings) comment (on blogs, articles, forums) and make connections (through groups, friends, social media). Or just browse the site and search for the information you need! Note: if you were a member of the ContactPoint community on the previous site (prior to January 2013), you will need to register again with this new version of ContactPoint.

How do I advertise with ContactPoint?

Where can I read articles by industry professionals on the website?

Careering is the new publication from CERIC where you can read up on various articles written by career development professionals. It replaces The Bulletin newsletter, which is now archived on the ContactPoint site.ContactPoint also hosts the archives of the weekly CareerWise newsletter; you can access issues all the way back to the very first one, in September 2012.

On the top navigation bar of the site hover over the Articles tab. Upon hover, the Careering, The Bulletin and CareerWise options should appear below. Under Articles, you will also find the articles written by participants in CERIC’s Graduate Student Engagement Program (GSEP); a repository of all book reviews published on ContactPoint (including from the blog and Careering magazine); and, lastly but not least, a link to ContactPoint’s blog.


How do I add a member of the ContactPoint community to my friends list on the website?

After you register, click on the Community tab of the top navigation bar and select members. Once on the Members page, click on “Add Friend” beside the name of the person to add that member to your Friends list. Having people in your Friends allows you to communicate with them, share your ideas and become an active member of our online community.






How do I post a job?

Anyone can post a job – at no cost. Simply register with the site, and then click on the Job Board tab in the top navigation bar. Once on the Job Board, click “Post a Job” and complete the required fields. Jobs appear automatically for 30 days. If you would like to increase the visibility of your job, you can choose a “Premium” listing for $25 that will highlight your listing, place it at the top of the Job Board, keep it online for 60 days instead of 30, and will ensure your job posting is included in our popular weekly CareerWise newsletter.


How do I find jobs?

You click on the Job Board in the top navigation bar. Then you can browse the Job Board or use the search function to target jobs by keyword. You can also set up a Job Alert to receive an e-mail whenever a new job that matches your criteria is added to the site.


How can I find out about upcoming events?

On the top navigation bar, select the Learning tab. Out of the drop-down menu select the category of an event that interests you (e.g. workshops, courses, conferences, career fairs etc.). By navigating through these pages, you will never miss out on a valuable opportunity to attend events that interest you and connect with your peers.


Can I add my own events?

Yes! Once you have registered with the site, simply click on the Learning tab, then on the “Add an Event” button. You just need to enter your event details and hit “Publish”. Please remember to select a “Category” for your Event. You will also want to include a hyperlink to your own site where people can find more information. Your event will be reviewed by the ContactPoint site administrator prior to publication.


How does the Directory work?

The Directory contains links to useful and interesting publications, websites, associations, education programs, assessment tools and much, much more. Any registered user with the site can click “Add a Listing.” Just some examples of what you can do: post a listing for your Organization for networking and referral purposes; add a website for career practitioners working with New Canadians; or submit a Promising Practice that your agency or career centre wants to share. Please remember to select a category; adding tags or keywords will help people find your listing. All submitted listings will be reviewed by the ContactPoint site administrator prior to being published.

If you are searching the Directory, you can search by categories, keywords or follow the tags.


I have added content to the site, but I don’t see it anywhere?

Events, directory listings and jobs added to the site need to be approved by the site administrator prior to posting. This ensures relevant information and the integrity of the ContactPoint community. Content will usually be reviewed and will appear within one business day. How can I create a Group around a desired topic of interest?

Click on the Community tab of the top navigation bar. Out of the drop-down menu select Groups. Once on the Groups page, click on the “Create a Group” button at the top left of the page. Creation of Groups allows for people of similar interests to come together, discuss and share ideas. Anyone can start a Group. Examples of Groups include: job developers, mental health or career practitioners in Saskatchewan.


How do I create a Forum?

Click on the Community tab of the top navigation bar. Out of the drop-down menu select Forums. Once on the Forums page, click on the “New Topic” button at the top left of the page. A Forum is where you start discussions on specific topics of interest or it’s a great place to ask a question of the community. Some examples include: Changes to Employment Insurance;  How do you respond to a client who wants to connect on LinkedIn?; or Applying chaos theory in career counselling.


Are there rules for posting to Groups and Forums?

Postings to Groups and Forums and creation of Member Profiles do not require approval. Discussions should remain on topics related to career development, use respectful language and not be overtly promotional in nature. We reserve the right to move any postings better suited to another section, such as Jobs, or to delete any comments deemed inappropriate. Community members not abiding by these guidelines may be removed in order to ensure the best experience for all users.

How can I visit the ContactPoint Facebook and Twitter pages? What about LinkedIn?

On the top navigation bar simply click on the Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn icons to take you to the desired page. You’ll also see a Twitter feed at the bottom of the homepage with our latest tweets. ContactPoint is part of the CERIC Career Developer Network on LinkedIn – a large and active group.

How do I become a member of the ContactPoint Facebook page?

Click on the Like button on the top right of the page. To contact us though Facebook, send us a message by clicking on the Message button. Our Facebook page will allow you to stay on top of our latest news posts as well as material we feel you may find interesting. It also enables you to share the information you feel may be of interest to ContactPoint.


How can I stay on top of ContactPoint’s Twitter updates?

By clicking Follow on our Twitter page, you will become constantly updated about ContactPoint’s posts such as news, upcoming events along with other interesting information. You will be able to discuss our posts with other “followers” of our page, engage in our online community and share knowledge about ContactPoint related news posts and events.

Where do I find you on LinkedIn?

Click on the LinkedIn icon in the navigation bar. That will take you to our LinkedIn page, where you can stay on top on all of our news updates!
